Dermabrasion

During dermabrasion, a special handheld brush is gently moved across the treatment area. Fine diamond particles on the sides of the brush soften the edges of fine lines and scars and remove skin irregularities. Dermabrasion can last from a few minutes to an hour, depending on the number and size of areas being treated. Multiple treatments are generally required in order to achieve optimal results. Dermabrasion can be performed with a local anesthetic, which is often combined with a sedative or general anesthesia for larger treatment areas.

The Dermabrasion Procedure

During dermabrasion, a special handheld brush is gently moved across the treatment area. Fine diamond particles on the sides of the brush soften the edges of fine lines and scars and remove skin irregularities. Dermabrasion can last from a few minutes to an hour, depending on the number and size of areas being treated. Multiple treatments are generally required in order to achieve optimal results. Dermabrasion can be performed with a local anesthetic, which is often combined with a sedative or general anesthesia for larger treatment areas.

Dermabrasion Recovery

Redness and swelling of the skin are to be expected after dermabrasion; any burning or tingling sensations can be alleviated with medication. These side effects should dissipate within a few days to a week. Depending on the size of the treatment area and level of post-operative discomfort, patients can usually return to normal daily routines within one to two weeks after the procedure.

Risks

Although Dr. Kenneth Bermudez will work to minimize any potential risks involved with dermabrasion, the possibility of complications does exist. Risks of the procedure include:

  • Change in skin color

  • Enlarged skin pores

  • Scarring

  • Infection

  • Reaction to anesthesia

Dr. Bermudez uses only the safest equipment and stringently follows the guidelines of dermabrasion treatment to ensure that complications do not occur. Dr. Bermudez will go over all aspects of dermabrasion with you during your initial consultation.

Dermabrasion has been a standard cosmetic treatment for skin renewal for many years, and the technology continues to improve. Some of the benefits of treatment include:

  • Lessening in the appearance of scars

  • Reduction of fine lines and wrinkles

  • Better skin pigmentation

  • Fresher, healthier-looking skin

Chemical Peel

Aged or damaged skin can be rejuvenated to a youthful sheen with a chemical peel. This popular skin care treatment, available at our Bay Area practice, uses a specially formulated solution that is applied to the skin to remove surface layers of dead cells and stimulate the growth of new cells. The removal of damaged outer layers of skin tightens the area and reduces wrinkles, and allows the fresher underlayers to appear. Chemical peels can also be used to address acne scarring, uneven skin pigmentation, sun damage, and blotchy patches. There are varying degrees of chemical peel, ranging from light to deep-skin treatments. You and Dr. Kenneth Bermudez will decide the extent of the chemical peel according to your aesthetic goals and the size of the area to be treated.
