FAQ’s: Breast Augmentation

breast augmentation faqs

Breast augmentation surgery is one of the most popular surgical procedures performed at Bermudez Aesthetic Medicine. Whether a patient is interested in increasing their cup size, feeling more confident in less clothing or restoring lost volume after weight loss or pregnancy, breast augmentation is sought after by women of all ages and sizes. Here are a few of the most frequently asked questions patients pose during their initial consultation.

Does Breast Augmentation Increase My Risk of Breast Cancer?

Studies have shown that women who get implants are not at an increased risk of getting breast cancer, nor does it interfere with the detection or treatment of breast cancer. Breast implant patients who do get breast cancer have the same chance of obtaining remission, or being free of cancer for 5 years, as women without implants.

What is the Ideal Age for Breast Augmentation?

We see many women in their 20’s who want to have a larger cup size and to look better in certain fashions. Many women in their 30’s and 40’s opt to have the procedure after considering it for years and / or waiting until they were through with pregnancies and breastfeeding. Even in your 50’s and 60’s, you can still undergo breast augmentation surgery and achieve a great result.

Should I Wait Until I am Done Having Children to Have Augmentation?

Pregnancy will change the size and shape of a woman’s breasts whether she has implants or not. It is generally recommended that pregnancy be postponed until 6 months after the surgery.

We should also mention that Breast-feeding with implants is still possible and has been shown to be safe for the baby and the mother.

Will Augmentation Work for Me if I Feel My Breasts are Sagging?

Depending on how much the breast sags, breast lift surgery may also be necessary. Placement of the implant may not adequately correct the sagging breast tissue and excess skin may need to be removed. This is something that Dr. Bermudez can discuss with you during your consultation.

How Do I Choose My New Size?

This can be a hard decision for many patients. You will want to consider your lifestyle and how larger breasts will impact it. Are you a runner? Do you participate in sports? You should also consider your body type and what volume of the implant will go with your frame. Dr. Bermudez and his team of medical professionals can assist you in choosing an implant size that will compliment your body type and lifestyle.

Will My Nipple Sensation or Feeling Change?

Most women will have a loss of some feeling or sensation following breast augmentation surgery which can persist for 6 -12 months. However, a small percentage of women may have permanent changes in nipple sensation.

What Will My Downtime Be?

This depends on how physically demanding your job and lifestyle are. Lifting anything heavier than 5 pounds should be avoided for 6 weeks, this includes children! This lifting restriction may prevent you from returning to work or require you to have additional help at home if you have small children. You will want to plan accordingly.

You will experience a moderate amount of pain post-procedure. This can be controlled with medication for the first couple of weeks. You can start driving one week after surgery provided you have stopped taking pain medications.

It should also be mentioned that if severe pain following surgery does not subside with pain medications, you should notify the surgeon immediately as infection or complication can result.

How Much Does Surgery Cost?

Breast augmentation costs will depend on the implants and size as well as any other procedures that need to be performed at the same time. Dr. Bermudez will discuss the medical aspects of the procedure with you and a patient care coordinator can give you a full pricing break down.
